| Goa to consider VAT reduction on petro products Posted: 30 Jun 2010 06:01 AM PDT Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat today said the state was examining the possibility of reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products to ease the prices. The Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Department has been asked to examine the possibility of reducing VAT on these products, Kamat told PTI. “Last time, when prices were hiked we had reduced the VAT on it,” he said. Kamat said that the commissioner of commercial taxes would now examine the situation in other states vis-a-vis reduction of VAT. ”Generally, there is uniformity in VAT between various states. This aspect also needs to be considered”, Kamat, who is also holding the finance portfolio, said. The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had protested against the petroleum product hike. | Senior Goa govt officer arrested for accepting bribe Posted: 29 Jun 2010 08:09 PM PDT Goa vigilance department today arrested a senior state government officer after he was caught red handed while accepting a bribe to clear bills of animal feed supplied to various government-run farms by a contractor. P K Patidar, registrar of cooperative societies who also holds additional charge as director animal husbandry and veterinary services, was trapped by anti-corruption branch (ACB) of Vigilance department. “Patidar was caught while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 in his office. He had sought 10 per cent of total Rs 23 lakh which was billed to animal husbandry department after supplying animal feed,” police inspector Nilesh Rane told reporters here. ACB sleuths raided Patidar’s office in Patto here at 5.15 pm and searched the place for nearly five hours. Police said the contractor had supplied animal feed to government-owned Dhat and Copordem farms. Courtesy: PTI |
