Pacheco will have to give ‘agni pariksha’: NCP

Posted: 15 Jun 2010 09:24 AM PDT

NCP today came out in support of former Goa minister Fransisco Pacheco, the prime accused in the death of a woman friend, saying the party was with the legislator but he would have to give ‘agni pariksha’ by facing the law.

“The party is with him. Mickey will have to give agni pariksha by facing the law. He cannot escape the law,” NCP Goa spokesman Avinash Bhonsle said.

Commenting on the issue for the first time, local NCP leaders said that they were with Pacheco, who is going through tough times.

Pacheco is on the run as the Crime Branch probing Nadia Torrado’s death has named him as an accused in the case.

Bhonsle alleged that Pacheco has been targeted by a few Congress leaders from South Goa after his success in holding massive NCP convention in his village.

Goan cuisine Gallery

GOA - Just saying the word makes me think of Goan food! With influences from the Portuguese rule, its neighbouring South-Indian states, the Arabian Sea on the west and the mix of Hindu and Christian dwellers, Goa is diverse and multi-cultural in its homes, languages and scripts, festivals and food. The Mardi Gras-like carnivals and its pork dishes can be attributed to Portugal while the seafood comes from the Arabian Sea; coconut, kokum (Konkan specialty) and intense spices are influences of South India and Feni, the cashew-fruit drink comes from its tropical climate.

Goan cuisine comprises Hindu vegetarian and the Portuguese-influenced non-vegetarian (seafood & pork) Catholic food.

Posted: 14 Jun 2010 08:56 PM PDT

The much-awaited monsoon showers lashed the State early Monday even as the Met Department warned of heavy rains accompanied by strong gusty winds in next 24 hours. "Rain or thundershowers accompanied by strong gutsy wind would hit parts of the State. Some areas might also witness moderate to heavy rainfall in coming 24 hours", Indian Meteorological Observatory in-charge K V Singh said. Predicting a good rainfall in the next two days, Singh said, "though the monsoon arrived late in the State, we expect good showers in coming days”

Singh confirmed that south-west monsoon had advanced into Goa on June 10 but due to the weakening of monsoon currents, the State could not witness good amount of rainfall at the beginning. "The currents have now started to intensify. The conditions are favourable for further advancement of monsoon", he said.

The Met Department recorded 55.7 mm of rainfall in last 24 hours with Pernem receiving the highest amount of rainfall followed by Panjim, Valpoi and Ponda. With this, the maximum temperature has now fallen to 29.6 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature continued to remain at 24.0 degree Celsius.
