| Goa to launch new adult education scheme Posted: 28 Jun 2010 09:12 AM PDT It will be aimed at pushing the 82-84 per cent literacy rate of the state to 100 per cent. The Goa government has decided to launch an adult education programme intended to take the state, ranked as India’s fourth most literate, to the top of the list.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that the State Education Department had been authorised to embark on a new adult education mission which will push the 82-84 per cent literacy rate to 100 per cent. “The cabinet has approved the new scheme. We have always been languishing between the 82 to 84 per cent mark for the last several years. With this new innovative scheme, we will work our way up,” he said, reports IANS.
Kamat further said that the adult education scheme would be worked out with the help of the State Education Department and other NGOs working in the education sphere. “In earlier schemes, we used to have night schools for adults. But the concept did not work. We are looking at working things differently now,” Kamat said, adding the new scheme will be flexible, especially in the timing of the classes and their location in order to suit the needs of those employed and unemployed people seeking an education.
The new adult education scheme is expected to cost the exchequer Rs 1.78 crore, he said.

| Posted: 27 Jun 2010 09:31 AM PDT It's turned out to be a nightmarish birthday for Gautam Vora, a successful stockbroker and a regular at some of south Mumbai's most happening parties, who turned 32 on Saturday. Former supermodel Gautam, whose phone was switched off on Saturday, met Viveka at a party in Goa a month ago and they fell in love. Friends said marriage was very much on the cards and Viveka was planning to throw a secret party for Gautam, five years her junior, on his birthday. But he had other plans. Police sources said that on Thursday night, Gautam visited Viveka at her 5th floor residence, and they had an argument. Some neighbours described the altercation as 'loud' and 'nasty.' Apparently, this was when Gautam told Viveka he was not ready for marriage. According to an autopsy report, Viveka hanged herself between 3pm and 5pm on Friday. Gautam owns ULJK Securities Limited, a stockbroking firm. He studied at Indiana University, Bloomington and lives on Napean Sea Road in Mumbai. He is also allegedly involved with another model, Hemangi, with whom he has an on-and-off relationship. When we tried to speak to Hemangi, she refused to comment. Friends described Gautam as somebody who "loves the good life, throws lavish parties and likes to be seen in the company of beautiful and influential people." Viveka was last spotted with friends at a party on June 17. At the time she was aglow in the first flush of her relationship with Gautam. Courtesy:TOI |
