Sharma orders denotifiation of SEZ in Goa

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 07:38 AM PST

Mr Shantaram Naik M.P. today met Commerce Minister Shri Anand Sharma and requested him  to denotify the three notified SEZs of Goa immediately, upon which,  Mr Sharma without wasting any time passed immediate orders to denotify the three SEZs in Goa.

Mr Naik said that he expects the formal notifications to be issued soon. In a statement issued today from New Delhi Mr Naik said that he met Mr Sharma at 12-30 p.m.  and, within five minutes he wrote the order on the very memorandum submitted by him  and instructed the officials to issue the notification immediately.

Mr Naik reminded  the minister that he had held the view that since a petition on the matter is pending before the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court, the Government does not propose to denotify the said SEZs, although there is was injunction issued against the Central Government restraing them from denotifying.

Mr Naik informed the minister that the petition which was pending,  is now disposed of and, the court has held that the allotment of land  to the SEZs  itself was illegal.

In reality now , the developers have no land with them. The denotification is now a formality, Mr Naik told the minister.

Mr Naik said that since he had informed the minister's office about the purpose of seeking minister's appointment,  Mr Sharma was ready with  the judgment downloaded by him from the website.

Mr Naik thanked Mr Sharma for his quick action,  post the pronouncement of the judgement.

Lackluster Foreign Presence Rankles IFFI-GOA Organisers

The inability to attract enough foreign delegates was one of the main shortcomings of the 41st International Film Festival of India (IFFI), an official said Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) chief S.M. Khan said that the only way forward for IFFI was to attract more and more foreign delegates.

“The participation of foreign delegates has to be in thousands. We are not happy with the current participation of foreign delegates. Many of them come, but they come for their films. We want delegates to come just to see the festival,” he said.

Khan said IFFI’s other shortcoming was its inability to attract world premieres, which he said helped in beefing up the international profile of a film festival.
